Latino Book Review is thrilled to announce WORKS IN TRANSLATION: Poetic Expressions in Indigenous Literatures, our newest public program as part of the Library of America’s Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home initiative. Moderated by our platform’s executive director, Dr. Rossy Evelin Lima, this event will feature a virtual panel on the translation of indigenous poetics in the Zapotec, Nahuatl, and Tu’un Savi languages in Mexico.
We are excited to welcome for this event the language activist Janet Chavez Santiago (Zapotec-Spanish), medievalist and scholar Dr. Diego Arenas (Nahuatl-Spanish), and poet and cultural promoter Nadia López García (Tu’un Savi-Spanish), who will share their experiences translating indigenous poetic forms as well as advocating for the representation and revitalization of their native languages.
The discussion will explore several foundational themes central to the Latino Poetry initiative—including, but not limited to, voice and resistance, language, and ancestry and identity—followed by a Q&A session, providing an opportunity for viewers from across the globe to engage in the conversation. The program will be offered in Spanish, with captions available in both Spanish and English.
This event is free and open to the public, though advanced registration is required to attend (RSVP below).

This program is presented as part of Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home, a major public humanities initiative taking place across the nation in 2024 and 2025, directed by Library of America and funded with generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Emerson Collective. The program is additionally backed by a grant provided by Humanities Texas and the promotional efforts of our partner, UNAM San Antonio Texas.
