The Little Coyote and the Skunk |
|
Translated by Cuauhtemoc Zaragoza
The little coyote lived in a home up in the hill and one day he ordered the one who fed him to:
“Go find us something to eat while I take a nap. You know I couldn’t sleep all night. I was stalking the chickens from the chicken coup, but I couldn’t catch anything, and now I’m sleepy.”
The other one left, while the other stayed snoring. He then woke up very late from his nap, and since the other had not come back, he said:
“I wondered what happened? Why hasn’t he come back? I’m so lazy to go out right now. Now what will I do? I am going to find my food. Do I have pain on my feet to stop me from going myself?”
He went to look for food, and he walked and walked until he found a corn field. He found a skunk and the little coyote asked him:
“Hey! Where are you going? I’m looking for my food. What about you? Where are you going?”
“I am also in search of my food. Now that we found each other let's bet. If you want, we can race. Get in this lane and we will start running at the same time. At the count of three we will start running together.”
“Wait, let me ask you something, are we betting in vain? What! Will I win nothing? Will I hurt myself in vain? If you want, let's bet what I am looking for; if I lose I will give you what would have been my food, if you lose, you will give me what you were going to eat.”
“However, you want, I will do whatever you say.”
“Okay. One, two, three!...”
The little coyote started running and running but the skunk dragged himself around and went inside his burrow. The little coyote didn’t know that a different skunk was waiting for him in the other end and he had heard from afar. So, when the coyote parted, the other skunk was already siting there, and the coyote told him:
“Let’s go again! How could you beat me? You can run faster than me? Let’s go again!?
So, they ran again, and again the other skunk was waiting for him at the end and he said:
“See I beat you again. Now give me what you promised.”
“Hey! If you want what I promised so much, wait until I go look for it, and when we see each other again here, I will give it to you.”
“No! we said that you were going to give it to me right after the race.”
“But I don’t have anything right now!”
“And we said you were going to give it to me. Are you a child? You are old for this, you are matured, and you do this to me! You have judgment and you still do this to me? Leave that to the women. That’s not for you. You are a man!
“Can’t you hear what I am saying, coyote?”
“I told you to wait for me here!”
“Okay then go get it. Meanwhile I will look for some bugs to eat. If you are going to get me something go get it right now.”
The little coyote took off running, with a straight tail and laughing. He never came back. Till this day the skunk is still waiting for him.
