A House of My Own
Stories from My Life
Sandra Cisneros
A profoundly intimate memoir by one of America's greatest writers. A House of My Own by Sandra Cisneros contains a compilation of never-before-published work, nonfiction writings, as well as family memories that explore and document her life from her early days in Chicago to her current residence in Mexico. The author states, "The memories I present here are a way of claiming my real life and differentiating it from my fiction, since there seems to be so much out there assumed or invented about me.” The desire for a house is a constant theme throughout her book. Cisneros states, “All my life I’ve dreamt and dream about a house the way some women dream of husbands.” In these writing pieces, we become witness of thirty years of her life, which in many ways, lay the foundation and layer the bricks of her literary career. The warm and detailed anecdotes presented by Cisneros makes the reader feel closer to the author than ever before. Like a confidant, she shares both her professional and personal struggles as we embark in a search for her house, her story. It is said that a house is a reflection of a person's inner self. In this sense, A House of My Own is the author's self-search, an internal voyage where the reader can see and touch the walls of her spirit. At the end of the voyage we find ourselves reaching Sandra's house; a warm, welcoming home, filled with passion and colors. |
Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954. Internationally acclaimed for her poetry and fiction, she has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Medal of Arts, the Lannan Literary Award and the American Book Award.
