El dios de Darwin
Sabina Berman

el dios de darwin book cover

A clash between religion and science in the making since the findings of the theory of evolution by Charles Darwin. El dios de Darwin is an acute fiction thriller that attempts to determine a common ground in our present time, narrated through the voice of a highly functional autistic biologist sought by the Interpol to help in perplexing investigation. From her secluded work in the ocean, she seeks to elucidate the disappearance of a long time colleague, who cries to her for help, while in the hands of religious radicals.

The protagonist, Karen Nieto, invites the reader to get under her skin and perceive reality in a practical manner, while trying to uncover what happened. A trail that begins following her friend's lead in Westminster Abby, where she uncovers a posthumous writing left by the author of “The Origin of the Species” which triggers this long standing debate once more.

Throughout El dios de Darwin, the reader unveils truths and facts about the extraordinary story of the diversity in life and its anomalies, weaved together along playful symbols and colorful and ironic characters. It is also a lesson on intolerance and its implications among human beings. Accompanied by drawings and written in a simple narrative style, the parallel stories of Darwin’s controversies and the drama and intrigue of the present, mingle seamlessly, which makes the book a page turner and a source of reflection.
Sabina Berman (Mexico City, 1955), is a playwright, storyteller, essayist and film theater director. She is a four-time winner of the National Playwriting Award in Mexico and the Juan Ruiz de Alarcon Award.
