Cumplimiento de la voluntad is a Spanish personal anthology by Nadia Contreras that compiles published works from 1999 to 2014. In Cumplimiento, readers are exposed to a mirror that portrays Contreras’ most intimate reflections; images that constitute a poetic gallery in which the degree of the author’s inner light constantly fluctuates, along with her disposition to survive loneliness, confusion, and abandonment.

Contreras’ determination may be interpreted as her desire to live on, despite the scars caused by a troubled childhood and an unsuccessful relationship. Her enduring will is conveyed in the poem titled Donde me encuentro, where she expresses: “Años después dejo de tomar enserio/ los capítulos de mi vida./ Quiero vivir./ Vivir es el término que más se acerca/ a mi propósito.” Throughout the book, the author compares herself with a humming bird, a fragile creature of light, often symbolizing one’s ability to look at the past and move on. She exposes the readers not only to her constant struggle between preserving her inner light and fading away, but also evokes images of the places, people, and memories within her emotional journey.

With Cumplimiento de la voluntad, Contreras invites us to witness her powerful story and insightful reflections. Perhaps indirectly, Cumplimiento encourages us to look in the mirror, analyze our lives, and have an intimate conversation with ourselves.

​Nadia Contreras (Colima, México, 1976) is the author of several poetry collections including Presencias (2008), Caleidoscopio (2013) and Visiones de patria muerta (2014). Contreras serves as the editor-in-chief for Bitácora de vuelos, a digital magazine that promotes poetry, fiction, essays, book reviews, among other things. ​
