MIT Press Grant Program for Diverse Voices: Empowering Underrepresented Voices

The MIT Press Grant Program for Diverse Voices is a testament to the institute's commitment to amplifying marginalized voices and fostering inclusive perspectives within academic publishing. Launched in 2021, this program provides vital support to authors who bring excluded or chronically underrepresented viewpoints to the fields in which the Press publishes, spanning sciences, arts, and humanities.

The program offers eligible authors a platform to share their unique insights and experiences by supporting their research and writing endeavors. It aims to empower authors from diverse backgrounds who may face barriers in scholarly publishing, thereby enriching the academic landscape with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.

Recipients of the grant program are selected through a rigorous process that involves submitting a book proposal and undergoing a successful peer review. Once selected, authors receive grants that can be utilized for various needs, including research travel, copyright permission fees, developmental editing, and other costs associated with the research and writing process.

The recipients of 2024 are:
  1. Kimberly Juanita Brown - "Black Elegies"
  2. Michel DeGraff - "Our Own Language: The Power of Kreyòl and Other Native Languages for Liberation and Justice in Haiti and Beyond"
  3. Amanda K. Greene - "Glitchy Vision: A Feminist History of the Social Photo"
  4. Silas Munro - "Data by Design: A Counterhistory of Data Visualization, 1789–1900"
  5. Anna Von Mertens - "Attention Is Discovery: The Life and Work of Henrietta Leavitt"

Through programs like these, the MIT Press continues to uphold its commitment to intellectual freedom and knowledge dissemination. By publishing diverse and underrepresented perspectives, the Press enriches public discourse, fosters interdisciplinary dialogue, and advances our collective understanding of the world.

Alan Gerardo Padilla Aguilar has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mexican American Studies. He has been honored with a State of Texas Joint Resolution for his work with the local community. He was chosen to participate in the Harvard Latino Leadership Initiative program at Harvard Kennedy School in 2013. He was also a research assistant for the PBS documentary, “The Head of Joaquin Murrieta.”
