Kiara and the Virus / Kiara y el virus
Kianny N. Antigua

Kianny N. Antigua
Kiara and the Virus, Kiara y el virus book cover

The new children's book by the award-winning author Kianny Antigua is here to help us talk to our children about the challenges of being at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Lightswitch Learning publishing, Kiara and the Virus will help children develop social-emotional resulting from hard to explain emotions during these difficult times. This captivating book includes questions and activities to complete after reading the book.

Information and emotional intelligence are critical in COVID-19 times. Through the endearing Kiara and her pet parrot Lulu, readers learn how to protect their loved ones and the strength within support systems such as other family members.

In this bilingual story, readers find common links that explain the complex situations children might have trouble grasping. One of these situations is not being able to visit a loved one such as Kiara's Abuelita, or going to the park to see her friends. Even though these are stressful circumstances, Kiara's parents make sure to let her know she is not alone in feeling overwhelmed, and they provide solace in understanding, "We are lucky we are together..."
The idea of the "new normal" is also presented in this undoubtedly necessary book, creating a platform to talk about our responsibilities, the opportunities to do our part, and recognize that "by doing all these little things, we are helping end this pandemic..."

With vibrant and lively illustrations by the incomparable Vanessa Balleza, Kiara and the Virus is not only the bilingual children's book you need to talk about COVID-19, but a valuable resource to embrace the possible ways we can let everyone know we are still connected.
