Twice Told Over
Adela Najarro
Twice Told Over is an intimate poetry collection by Adela Najarro which germinates like a mangrove that multiplies itself with her grandmother's stories and the blue-fields of Nicaragua. Marked by her family and heritage, Adela shares images of an endless green, childhood memories and la patria. This poetic mangrove begins with the author's birth and sprouts its roots beyond her origins. It tangles itself in her lyrical Spanglish and her conversations with César Vallejo and Rubén Darío. Meanwhile, she walks us through the streets of New York and San Francisco, leaving a touch of something that is "Not Nica/ Not gringa" but "Mezcla. Mestisaje." Twice Told Over includes verses meant for those who deeply embrace the rhythmic tunes of flor y canto as an intimate form of expression, shared only by those who are willing to sing their sorrows, ventures, love and desires to the world. It is in these verses that we find a sincere reflection of our true nature. |
Adela Najarro (San Francisco, California) has appeared in many journals including Acentos Review, BorderSenses and Notre Dame Review. She is an English instructor in Cabrillo College and Coordinator for the Puente Project.
