5 Contemporary Mexican Authors You Should Know
Fernanda Melchor is a Mexican journalist and writer. Born in Veracruz, Melchor is the author of Aquí no es Miami (2013) and Falsa Liebre (2013). Her fiction and nonfiction have appeared in The Paris Review, La Palabra y el Hombre, Excélsior, Replicante, Milenio semanal, Le Monde Diplomatique, Vice Latinoamérica, GQ Latinoamérica and Vanity Fair Latinoamerica. She is the recipient of the PEN Mexico Award for Literary and Journalistic Excellence, the International Literature Award, and the Anna Seghers-Preis, and has a degree in Journalism from the Universidad Veracruzana. Yuri Herrera was born in Actopan in 1970. He studied Political Science at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, then obtained a master's degree in Creative Writing from the University of Texas, El Paso, and a Ph.D. in Hispanic Language and Literature from the University of California, Berkeley. His novels Trabajos del reino (2014), Señales que precederán al fin del mundo (2009), and La transmigración de los cuerpos (2013) have earned him numerous awards, including the Premio Binacional de Novela Joven, the Premio Otras Voces, Otros Ámbitos, the Best Translated Book Award, and the English Pen Award. He teaches at Tulane University in New Orleans. |
Guadalupe Nettel is a Mexican writer. Born in 1973, Nettel has a PhD in Linguistics from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris and has been published in various magazines and publications including Granta, El País, The New York Times en Español, La Repubblica and La Stampa. Her novels El huésped (2006), El cuerpo en que nací (2011) and Después del invierno (2014), as well as her short stories, have received wide acclaim, and earned her awards such as the Anna Seghers-Preis, the Premio de Narrativa Breve Ribera del Duero, and the Premio Herralde de Novela. She is currently the director of the Revista de la Universidad de México. |
Ariana Brown is a poet and "part-time curandera." She holds a B.A. in African Diaspora Studies and Mexican American Studies from UT Austin as well as an MFA in Poetry from the University of Pittsburgh. Her work has been published in The Acentos Review, Nepantla, African Voices, and Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, and ¡Manteca!: An Anthology of Afro-Latin@ Poets from Arte Público Press. She has performed at venues such as Harvard University, the San Antonio Guadalupe Theater, Tucson Poetry Festival, and the San Francisco Opera Theatre. She is the author of two chapbooks, Messy Girl (2017) and Sana Sana (2020), and a debut poetry EP called Let Us Be Enough. |
Laia Jufresa was born in Mexico City and grew up in Veracruz and Paris. She is the author of the short story collection El esquinista (2014) and the novel Umami (2015), which has been translated to English, French, Italian, Dutch, Turkish, Polish, and Finnish. Her work has been published in various anthologies and magazines such as Letras Libres, Pen Atlas, Words Without Borders and McSweeney's. She is the recipient of the PEN Translates Award. In 2014 she was selected as one of twenty distinguished Mexican authors under forty by a panel composed of writers Guadulpe Nettel, Cristina Rivera Garza y Juan Villoro. She lives in Edinburgh. |
